Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) refers to a group of conjugated dienoic isomers of linoleic acid, including cis-9, trans-11 linoleic acid and trans-10, cis-12 linoleic acid. CLA is believed to assist with weight loss by promoting apoptosis in adipose tissue. Evidence indicates that it is only the tran-10, cis-12 isomer that have an effect on body fat mass. CLA also has cancer protective properties. CLA appears to be beneficial to the immune system by increasing the blood mononuclear cell production and inhibiting cyclooxygenase and lipoxygenase pathways in tumour cells.
